Apostolos Georgiou

Between 1971 and 1973 Georgiou Apostolos studied Architecture at the Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna. In 1973 he disrupts his studies in architecture and continues with studies in painting at Florence’s Accademia di Belle Arti (1973-1975). He remains in Italy (Milan and Venice) until 1980 when he returns to Greece permanently. He practices painting. The human figure is predominant in his work, which is often autobiographical.  The artist observes his surrounding reality and documents everyday subjects, focusing his interest especially on issues which are associated with gender, identity and interpersonal relations. He captures on canvas, the loneliness, disassociation and confusion of the contemporary human with a touch of sarcasm and a sense of humour.

He begins exhibiting his work in 1972 (ZM Gallery, Thessaloniki). After a long period of few presentations of his work, his retrospective is realised in Thessaloniki, organised by the Municipality of Thessaloniki. From then on he starts to exhibit systematically in Greece and abroad (Outlook, Athens 2003, Breakthrough! Grecia 2004: Contemporary Perspectives in the Visual Arts, Madrid, 2004, Thessaloniki Biennale, 2007, Apostolos Georgiou – Painting, National Museum of Contemporary Art, 2011 et al.).
